Connect GitHub

Keep your website's code in your own GitHub repository, updated automatically.

Your code, your account

WebYeti writes to repositories you choose. You can remove its access any time.

A commit for every change

Each change is saved with a message that says what you asked for.

Ready to run

A standard React project anyone (or any host) can run and deploy.

Before you start

  • A GitHub account. It's free: sign up at github.com/signup, then confirm your email address (GitHub won't let new accounts create repositories until you do).
  • A website project in WebYeti. GitHub sync is for websites; posts, ads and print designs are downloaded as images or PDFs instead.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open Publish

In your website project, click Publish in the top right. Scroll to the GitHub card.

  2. 2

    Click Connect GitHub

GitHub opens and asks you to authorize WebYeti. Check that the account shown in the top corner is the one you want to use.

    What you'll see on GitHub

WebYeti by WebYeti wants to access your account

    Repositories

    Public and private

    Organization access

Your organizations are listed here, each with a Grant or Request button.

    Authorize WebYeti

Click Authorize WebYeti. GitHub may ask for your password or a two-factor code first. That's GitHub checking it's you; WebYeti never sees it.

Why "public and private repositories"? That's the permission GitHub requires for an app to create a private repository for you and push code to it. WebYeti only writes to the repositories you pick in the next step.

  3. 3

Code in an organization? Grant access

If you want the code in a company or team account (an organization), click Grant next to it on the same GitHub screen. If you see Request instead, an owner of that organization has to approve WebYeti first: GitHub sends them the request, and it's under their organization's Settings → Third-party access.

  4. 4

    Choose a repository

You're back in WebYeti, signed in as your GitHub account. Pick one:

    • Create a new repository. Give it a name (we suggest one) and keep it Private unless you want the code to be public.
    • Use an existing repository. Search your repositories and pick one. WebYeti adds its files and updates them on every change; anything else in the repository stays as it is.

Leave Sync automatically on, then click Create repository and push. In a few seconds your code is on GitHub, with a first commit called "Add (your project) from WebYeti".

  5. 5

    Keep designing

That's it. With automatic sync on, every change you make, by chat, by restoring a version or by editing code, is committed a few seconds later. The commit message is what you asked for, like "Make the headline bigger", so the repository history reads like your chat. The GitHub button in the editor shows the sync status; click it to push manually or change the repository.

What's in the repository

A standard React + Vite project: every page and component, your images and fonts, and a package.json. To run it on a computer:

git clone https://github.com/<you>/<repository>.git
cd <repository>
npm install
npm run dev

To put it online from GitHub, import the repository in Vercel or Netlify. They detect Vite automatically, and every commit WebYeti makes redeploys your site.

If one-click connect isn't available: use a token

If the GitHub card shows steps for a token instead of sending you to GitHub, connect like this (about a minute):

  1. Open GitHub's new token page. The note WebYeti and the repo scope are filled in for you.
  2. Choose an Expiration. 90 days is a good balance; when it runs out, sync stops and you connect again the same way.
  3. Click Generate token at the bottom and copy the token (it starts with ghp_). GitHub shows it only once.
  4. Paste it into the GitHub card in WebYeti and click Connect. It's stored encrypted and used only for your projects.

Disconnecting

Troubleshooting

"You already have a repository called …"
Pick a different name, or choose that repository under Use an existing repository.
"Can't reach owner/repository"
The repository was renamed, deleted or moved, or WebYeti's access was removed. Click Change repository and choose it again.
Sync stopped working
Your token may have expired, or access was revoked on GitHub. Click Disconnect, then Connect GitHub again. Your repository and its history are kept.
My organization's repositories don't show up
The organization hasn't approved WebYeti yet (see step 3), or you don't have write access to those repositories.
Someone edited files on GitHub
WebYeti's next sync keeps their other files, but its own files (pages, components) are replaced with the version in WebYeti. Make changes in WebYeti to keep everything in step.
